Yamnuska  Backcountry Kitchen Shepherd’s Pie is one of our original recipes so if you like that “mom’s home cooking” taste, then definitely give this dinner a try. It’s comforting, delicious and perfect for a backcountry meal.

This popular classic is created from Alberta beef simmered gently in its own juices with peas, corn, carrots, green beans and spices, then served with our dairy-free creamy potato mix. Prepare the potatoes on the side or go classic by layering them on top. We have some great stories from customers about our Shepherd’s Pie being cooked ‘traditional’ in a deep dish and baked in a Dutch Oven with melted cheese when facilities have ovens. The kid in our chef still loves his shepherd’s pie with a squirt of ketchup on top for serving and then mixing it all together so very bite has all the delicious flavours!

Whether you have one pot facilities or a full kitchen at your disposal or whether you prefer it with cheese or ketchup, our shepherd’s pie will be a hit. Order extra for second servings, especially in the cold winter months!

Recipe Inspiration and History

A classic, Yamnuska Backcountry Kitchen's Shepherd's Pie Dehydrated dinner entree is one of the original recipes on our menu and remains a cornerstone on Chef's backcountry food menus. Originating in 18th century Ireland where it was made from leftovers and typically baked in a pastry crust, modern variations typically use mashed potatoes on top, and sometimes, the bottom too.

Keeping hydrated is even more critical when you consume foods that have had their moisture removed to keep from spoiling outside of the fridge and freezer. Proper re-hydration prior to consumption is very important. In high impact or long endurance activities, keeping your body properly hydrated is challenging and can on its own create issues with energy levels, strength and concentration. We have some tips for staying hydrated in the backcountry.

  • Mix contents of package and 650ml of water in a 1 L pot.
  • Bring to a boil.
  • Cover, turn off heat, and let stand 15 minutes or longer.
  • Return the mixture to boil,
  • Reduce heat and simmer for 10-12 minutes. Times vary depending on altitude and temperature.
  • Continue to rehydrate until the desired texture is achieved.
  • Season to your personal taste & serve.
